Drumroll, please

fernandofrench:

The votes are in! The novel we will be reading and discussing for the first-ever One Book, One Tumblr is…

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer.

It won by a landslide, garnering almost half of the total votes. Here are the next steps:

  1. Pick up a copy of the novel. It should be available at your local bookstore or online (Powell’s has new copies for 30 percent off). And for those with an aversion to paper, it’s also available as an e-book.
  2. Read, read, read — even if you’ve already read it.
  3. Post your ruminations, questions, and critiques, and tag them with #onepostonetumblr.
  4. Heart, reblog, and follow the discussion here.

Before the end of today, I will message five readers, at random, who reblogged the previous post so they can get a free copy of the novel.

And if I’m not forgetting anything else, let the reading begin.

The Short List

fernandofrench:

The arduous task of whittling 131 titles down to five is finally complete. Here are the nominees for the first-ever One Book, One Tumblr:

  1. The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing
  2. The Death of a Beekeeper by Lars Gustafsson
  3. Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin
  4. White Teeth by Zadie Smith
  5. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer

Voting will end on Monday, June 13 at noon PST, and the winning title will be announced immediately after.

Powell's Books

Lastly, the awesome folks at Powell’s Books will offer a 30 percent discount for new copies of the winning title. Check out their Tumblr page for more info.

And to kick it up a notch (bam!), we will give away copies of the novel to five Tumblr users, chosen at random, who vote and reblog this post.

So go forth, my friends, and vote wisely.

"I'm always nervous suggesting things to people because I feel that if they don't like them, they will judge me and then think I'm a terrible person. But here it goes anyway;

Book - I'm making my way through the Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan. I'm not a big fantasy reader, but my friend said he would read Game of Thrones if I read this, and I agreed. 3 books later and while it isn't the greatest thing ever written, I can't seem to stop reading.

Movie - City of God is a great movie that I think doesn't get the amount of respect it should. I've been out of the country for a bit so I can't think of anything recent, so, sorry for that.

Music - The Mountain Goats - because The Sunset Tree is one of the greatest albums ever made."

Oh god I totally feel the same way. But you’re in luck here because I live for recommendations. Decisions and I do not get along at all so the kick toward good stuff is always, always appreciated. <3

I will definitely be giving Wheel of Time a try! There hasn’t been much fantasy on my radar since college and that one’s fairly highly recommended. Or maybe consistently is a better word for it. You’re not the first to call it addictive but not great.

City of God, with Patrick Swayze where he’s a doctor in India? Or is that even called City of God. Oh no that’s City of Joy. City of God is the one in Brazil with Seu Jorge? Obviously I need to find this out and watch it immediately!

I LOVE THE MOUNTAIN GOATS. That is where my next iTunes gcard is going, thank you!

"Oh I thought you would have read John Green before. I really like his book Looking for Alaska, though it gets kinda depressing a bit. Paper Towns by him is also awesome. The book Will Grayson, Will Grayson by both him and David Levithan is also pretty good (a really good character driven book)

The Book Thief is pure win. The other books by that author are decent too, but the Book Thief is just... gah *starry eyed*"

I like the Nerdfighters stuff I’ve seen but haven’t tried any of his books. I definitely will now! And my copy of the Book Thief is supposed to be here tomorrow yay!

"I have another book rec for you, and for everyone, really. I can't remember if I've flailed at you about this amazing novel before or not, but whatever: Green Grass, Running Water by Thomas King. It's extremely funny and intelligent, and most of the humour comes from subverting and poking fun at racial stereotypes in popular culture. There are so many layers upon layers of allusions and jokes that it takes multiple readings to catch them all. Stylistically, it demonstrates a really fascinating way of merging oral storytelling traditions with mainstream written literary storytelling. The characters are great, the story is great, it's told in a funny, bittersweet way, and it's all-around a tremendously fun read. I recommend it to everyone, but especially white readers looking for novels not written specifically for white people, like nearly everything else is."

Oooooooooohhhhhh bb you know what I like!

Have you ever read any Sherman Alexie? I had a copy of The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven years and years ago but it disappeared during a move before I had a chance to read it.

"AM I TOO LATE FOR THE BOOKS?

Unequivocal recommendations:

The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill (published as Someone Knows My Name in the U.S.) -- historical fiction that follows one woman's life from its beginning in Africa through the U.S., Canada and Britain.

The White Bone by Barbara Gowdy -- it's a story about elephants and it rules everything ever.

Room by Emma Donoghue -- about a woman and her child who are kept prisoner by a gross old man but it's not a soul-destroying book like that makes it sound."

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE FOR BOOKS! And these look amazing, thank you so much!

"OK, so! This list is hopefully not a retread of anything you have previously read, based on my "compare books" with your profile. Also, many of these are long, and I am sorry. I find that I gravitate to big books.

House of Leaves [I will ALWAYS, ALWAYS recommend this book. It's weird and WEIRD but oh my gosh, so rewarding every time I read it.] In a sort of similar, deconstructing the novel in a typographic way, thing - Raw Shark Texts is also neat although I don't put it in my top 3 like I do with House of Leaves.

Name of the Wind/Wise Man's Fear [Crazy awesome fantasy, and they look like massive intimidating books, but as much as they are epic, they are also very light in places and very fast once you get sucked in.]

If you'd like some graphic novels, Runaways, Fables, and Y the Last Man are all aces.

Good Omens and American Gods? I didn't see any Gaiman on our "in common" books, but yeah. If you haven't - Good Omens (by him and Terry Pratchett) is an especially good summer read. I feel like you must have, but those two are my favorites of his (and both are obvious choices, but y'know).

If I think of anything else I will let you know!"

OMG Meg you are A+++++++

Long books are totally in my wheelhouse. Shorter ones I tend to zoom through without paying much attention for whatever reason.

Gaiman has never made it into my reading list somehow! How crazy. I AM ALL OVER THAT NAME OF THE WIND THOUGH OMG. And House of Leaves is one that keeps getting rec’d to me but I thought it was horror for a long time and avoided it? Idek.

Graphic novels omg! I loved Watchmen so much and then someone rec’d League of Extraordinary Gentlemen as a) awesome and b) better than the movie, but I just couldn’t get into it at all and then I stopped trying to find something else. :| These three look pretty cool though!

"Putting this here cause I ramble too much for the reply box's character limit...

I mostly read YA stuff if you are interested... I know it is not for everyone. Uhm.. The After Life by Daniel Ehrenhaft was one I enjoyed. It's a road trip story, though it focuses less on the plot and more on the characters (which is stuff I love) Anything by John Green is fantastic (though I am sure you know that already) The Book Thief by Markus Zusak has been one of my favorite books since I was in Highschool. Uh... Unwind by Neal Schusterman was really good too.

I am trying to think of books that you may not have read, or give a fun, relaxing/exciting read."

There really are not enough fun, light-hearted reads in my bookstacks, alas. Thank you for these!

I actually haven’t read anything by John Green, I don’t think! The Book Thief has been at the top of my to-read list at Goodbooks forever so I will definitely check that out too <3 <3

“Amy [Poehler] was in the middle of some such nonsense with Seth Myers across the table, and she did something vulgar as a joke. I can’t remember what it was exactly, except it was dirty and loud and ‘unladylike.’

Jimmy Fallon, who was arguably the star of the show at the time, turned to her and in a faux-squeamish voice said, ‘Stop that! It’s not cute! I don’t like it.’

Amy dropped what she was doing, went black in the eyes for a second, and wheeled around on him. ‘I don’t fucking care if you like it.’ Jimmy was visibly startled. Amy went right back to enjoying her ridiculous bit. I should make it clear that Jimmy and Amy are very good friends and there was never any real beef between them. (Insert penis joke here.)

With that exchange, a comic shift took place. Amy made it clear that she wasn’t there to be cute. She wasn’t there to play wives and girlfriends in the boys’ scenes. She was there to do what she wanted to do and she did not fucking care if you like it.
